Washington Post Review 4/22/05 - Like many of his role models, Johnny A. is clearly more interested in establishing a mood than soloing, though he occasionally tore through some blues-rooted riffs. Imaginatively arranged ballads punctuated the show, with "Poor Side of Town" and "Wichita Lineman" creating atmospheric interludes. The guitarist, well versed in sophisticated harmonies and thumb-stroked octaves, also ventured into jazz territory with plenty of help from bassist Jesse Bastos and drummer Chris Farr.

Martini Bar, Columbia, MO - Review Print E-mail

Martini Bar, Columbia, MO 10/25/05 - OK...the show. Johnny A plays instrumental guitar music. His band consists of Jesse Bastos on bass and Chris Farr on drums. Great support from these guys. They were all about laying down a solid platform for Johnny A to dance over. And when they each got a solo spot....they both delivered. The bassist (playing a 5 string MUSICMAN Bongo Bass) even did some tasteful right-hand chordal tapping while playing bass notes with his left hand. I'm not usually a big fan of this when it's done to showboat....but this was perfect as he managed to imply a rhythm guitarist sketching out chords while still providing a solid bass line. Nice. He played through two Mesa Boogie Walkabouts and had a great fat tone.

JOHNNY A
www.johnnya.com
(Summer 2005) by Ken Kirklewski

Hailing from Malden Massachusetts, Johnny A has been a lifelong fan of all music. Weather it was a pair of drum sticks as a youngster or the feel and sound of six strings when he was a teen, music was a big player in his life. It was only natural that he would have a stint at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Johnny was in various bands throughout the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, including a seven year collaboration with Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band.

News Bulletin! Music Man Bongo Sighting in Austin! Jesse Bastos Grooves on His Music Man Bongo!

“The Bongo has become the standard instrument for all of my gigs.  It’s the best of both worlds – all the tonal qualities that the other Music Man instruments have but a lot more versatile with a 24 fret fingerboard, 4 bands of EQ, and a pickup pan switch for more variations,” explained Bastos.  “Plus it looks really hot.  Lately I’ve been getting a lot of complements on its looks.  One audience member at a recent show even said that it had a lot of stage presence!”
